In memory of Professor Ferrando Mantovani (1933-2024), Dean of Criminal Law Professors

Obituary

The Direction of Criminal Justice Network, the Editorial Board and the Editorial Team share in the grief of the family, students and the scientific community of criminal law scholars over the passing of Professor Ferrando Mantovani, member of the Accademia dei Lincei and Emeritus Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Florence, where he taught from 1968 to 2008.

The Italian Association of Professors of Criminal Law announced the news of Professor Mantovani's passing as follows: "A great Master of the Florentine School and penal sciences, a scholar of internationally recognized renown, a leading figure in Italian legal doctrine since the mid-20th century, and a mentor to generations of students, Professor Mantovani made fundamental contributions to our discipline. Few have explored so comprehensively, through his works—both monographic and otherwise—and his foundational textbooks, both the general and special parts of our field. His aptitude for analysis and systematization, the depth and rigor of his study, the originality of his thought, and his intellectual curiosity toward new and complex themes, as well as the reality governed by law and its socio-criminological aspects, are among the hallmarks of a great Master and intellectual. His works shaped us, and today, we mourn his loss".
